A Littleton man died Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 48 near Highway 561, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Trooper Levern Bynum said factors contributing to the crash which claimed the life of 29-year-old James Davis Jr. include reckless driving and speed.

Bynum estimated Davis was traveling more than 100 miles per hour on Highway 48 when he ran off the road to the right, overcorrected and then ran off the roadway to the left shortly before 9:15 a.m.

The car then rolled several times before becoming airborne and striking a tree. Davis was ejected from the vehicle.

Bynum said a toxicology report is pending to determine whether alcohol or drug use was a factor.
