The bridge at the Highway 561 crossing of Conocannara Swamp will be replaced this year, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
DOT said the bridge opened on the eve of World War II in 1939 and since then has become structurally deficient, requiring increasingly more repairs and temporary closures for maintenance.
It is located southeast of Halifax.
The structure will be replaced with a modern bridge this year by National Bridge Builders of Kernersville for $2.2 million.
The contractor will begin construction late next month and it must be completed by the fall of 2022.
To minimize impacts to the traveling public and emergency personnel, a prefabricated bridge will be set alongside the existing one.
Traffic will be detoured onto the temporary bridge while the existing one is demolished and replaced.
