The North Carolina School Public Relations Association honored the Roanoke Rapids Graded Schools today for excellence in communications.
RRGSD earned a total of three Blue Ribbon Awards for outstanding and effective communication.
The ceremony, which was held virtually this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, recognized 41 districts across the state.
During the Blue Ribbon Awards ceremony, State Superintendent Catherine Truitt paid tribute to award winners and thanked all North Carolina school districts for their efforts to effectively communicate during difficult times.
Truitt praised the districts and their communication teams for the powerful way they have responded to help families, students, and staff during the COVID crisis. "You have conquered the digital landscape in order to meet the ever-changing demands of this pandemic.”

RRGSD received three Blue Ribbon Silver awards for excellence in electronic media for its video informing families of the state mandated COVID-19 health screening and mask requirements, an award for its Return to Learn COVID-19 publication, and an award for photography.
“This was a team effort with members of the superintendent’s cabinet, board members, and parents working together to develop an informative and well-designed publication and video for our families and community,” said Les Atkins, the system’s public information officer.
NCSPRA is a statewide professional organization serving more than 150 members. Its mission is to build support for public education through well-planned and responsible public relations.
“We are excited that NCSPRA recognized the amazing work our team has done this past year. Open and honest communication with our families and stakeholders is key to the success of any school district. That positive relationship has certainly helped us to gain the trust and confidence of our school community,” said Superintendent Dain Butler.
Said Atkins: “COVID-19 has certainly presented many challenges for our students, staff, and community as a whole. Consistent communication and active listening has been more important than ever these past few months. I’m excited to see our district honored for these efforts.”
