Opening ceremonies for the Southeast Regional Babe Ruth Tournament were held this afternoon at Ledgerwood Field.
This year’s tournament includes three teams from North Carolina with the Roanoke Rapids team, which qualified as state champion, hosting.
The tournament includes one team from Tennessee, one from Virginia and two from Florida.

Gilbert Portela threw out the ceremonial pitch and was honored for being a member of the Roanoke Rapids Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.
Dicey King, the founding father of youth baseball in Roanoke Rapids was also recognized.
Roanoke Rapids City Manager Joseph Scherer said at Tuesday’s city council meeting, “The tournament brings teams and their families from several states to our city for the rest of the week. “
All hotel rooms in Roanoke Rapids are sold out for the event.
Said Scherer: “This is a positive tourism economic development activity for the city with the additional dollars being spent by the teams’ families for lodging, food and shopping.”
Lori Medlin, president and CEO of the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau said, “We are delighted to welcome teams from Florida, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina to Roanoke Rapids. We wish them luck.”
