An Enfield man was charged with second degree arson Friday night after allegedly attempted to burn his parent’s house down.

Stephon Garris, 18, of Sneed Road, was jailed on $10,000 bond and he has a January 19 court date.

The Enfield Volunteer Fire Department called the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office to the scene around 7 p.m., Detective Tyree Davis said, and he and Sergeant Paul Ward responded.

The fire department was able to save the house although it sustained substantial interior damage. “The fire department did a great job saving most of the house,” Davis said.

Ward and Davis learned Garris had an argument with his family and when they left he allegedly set fire to house, Davis said, declining to say how the fire was started. Once the fire was started Garris went to another family member’s house.

The second degree arson charge reflects no one else was at the house when the fire started.
