Halifax Community College (HCC) leadership remains committed to the health and safety of its students, faculty and staff.

Effective March 23, all face-to-face instruction will be suspended until further notice. Laboratory-based and clinical classes will cease after Friday, March 20.

“We have been working with our students and faculty, trying to ensure that our clinical and lab students complete as many of the required hours as possible before suspending in-person instruction,” said Dr. Michael Elam, president of HCC. “These students have been committed to their classes, and we have done everything reasonable within our power to ensure their hard work earns them their credential.”

HCC shifted to an online instruction model for all curriculum classes beginning March 18. Because some classes were not suitable to online instruction, classroom instruction is still available on a limited basis through March 20. These departments include Cosmetology, Welding, Automotive, Basic Law Enforcement Training, Fire/EMS, and other laboratory-based classes. Clinical instruction for all Allied Health department students will continue to follow the directives of the external clinical sites.

“These are very challenging and uncertain times for everyone,” said Elam. “We have been working with the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) office and all other college presidents from across the state to ensure that HCC remains in-step with the majority of other institutions.”

Faculty and staff of HCC are still available on campus to assist those students who need guidance during this transition period. Student support services and other College-based success measures remain fully operational to ensure all students have the resources needed to be successful. The HCC Learning Resource Center (LRC) and selected on-campus computer labs will remain open to ensure students have access to their online classes.

In addition, students who are concerned about food during this time are still able to come to campus to receive help. The HCC Food Pantry, though limited, will remain open to ensure all students have something to eat in the coming weeks.

 While the campus will remain open, all events have been canceled or postponed until further notice.
