Sixteen year old Roanoke Rapids High sophomore Abbey Acree has been involved in sports her whole life and contributes it to the person she is today.
For that reason Acree is teaming up with the Roanoke Rapids Optimist Club and bringing back the Challenger Tee Ball League for special needs children as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project to give others a chance have the experience.
The league is for Halifax and Northampton County special needs children who would otherwise not get to participate in a sport. According to Optimist member Carey Foster it has been 10 to 15 years since we had a challenger league. "It gives the kids a chance to get out and get involved and having a fun activity," added Foster.
The registrations forms will be accepted until March 31st for any player with special needs regardless of race, religion or economic ability and will be free with the help from league sponsors. Players will receive tee-shirt uniform, individual picture as well as a team photo for free.
The games will be played on Saturdays in Gaston at the Dwight Hall Park. Game dates are April 16, 30, May 14, 21 and June 5th. Times will be announced when total players are know.
If you are interested in a registration or have any questions about the league or even interested in becoming a volunteer, a coach or a sponsor to help make this a free league for the players, please contact Abbey Acree at (252)535-4954 or
