Halifax Academy honored its senior baseball and softball players Tuesday before their home game against Wayne Country Day of Goldsboro.
Softball recognized its only senior, Hayley Heath. Baseball recognized their 10 seniors; Luke Blackman, Taylor Harris, Ryan Hockaday, Tyler Jomo, Cody Moore, Bradley Myrick, Landon Poole, Collin Smith, Jacob Smith, & Matthew Wray. In turn the senior class with the rest of the team recognized & honored their head coach, Rabbit Long for his many years of dedicated coaching.
The Varsity Viking boys allowed 2 unearned runs and 1 earned run in the top of the 1st inning with a walk and hit batter, but came up with bats a blazing in bottom of the 1st to take the lead 4-3. Leadoff batter, Matthew Wray walked, Luke Blackman hit a single advancing Wray to 2nd. Ryan Hockaday laid down a beautiful bunt resulting in all 3 being safe. The throw to 3rd was not in time to beat Wray's speed. Collin Smith's single scored Wray and Landon Poole cleared the bases with a double to left field.
The Viking defense held Wayne Country Day scoreless for the next 3 innings while their offense continued by batting around in the bottom of the 3rd & 4th innings. Collin Smith would lead off the 3rd inning with a double, scoring when Poole got on off an error by the 2nd baseman. Ryan Mizelle would also get on off an error. Brandon Moody walked followed by Tyler Jomo's single and Bradley Myrick cleared the bases with a double to left. Vikings would add 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th with Collin, Landon, Mizelle, Moody, and Jomo scoring.
Vikings had a total of 13 hits: Collin Smith 2 singles & a double, Luke Blackman & Landon Poole with single & double, Bradley Myrick double, Matthew Wray, Ryan Hockaday, Ryan Mizelle, Brandon Moody, & Tyler Jomo with single each.
Vikings play last regular season game at home tomorrow against Epiphany of New Bern at 4:00.
