Water main breaks have caused service interruption and low system pressure for customers in southeastern Halifax County for the past two days.
Halifax County Public Utilities crews identified two water main breaks affecting customers in the Enfield, Scotland Neck, and Tillery communities.
The on-call technician notified departmental supervisors of the issue at 3:25 pm on Monday. Crews worked throughout the afternoon and evening to isolate the first leak on Highway 561 near Community Center Road in Tillery by closing nearby valves.
Early this morning technicians determined that isolating the first leak had not resolved the issue. A second leak on Highway 561 between Over the Farm Road and Roanoke River Correctional Institution was identified, and crews worked overnight to make repairs, but five county water tank levels are still low.
At this time, county water tanks are slowly refilling overnight, and Public Utilities believes the levels will normalize tomorrow.
Service has been restored to Enfield, Scotland Neck, and Tillery, but customers will notice that their water pressure may remain low until the water tanks refill.
Halifax County Public Utilities has issued a System Pressure Advisory for customers from the Highway 301 corridor south from Halifax, east to Scotland Neck.
According to the advisory, due to periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system, the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system is increased.
As a result, when water service is restored, consumers are advised to boil all water used for human consumption or use bottled water.
Water customers are also strongly urged to conserve water whenever possible.
