Frederick sentencing delayed until February

Originally scheduled for sentencing Tuesday, proceedings in the federal weapon case of Khaalid Sharif Frederick have been moved to the February term of court in New Bern.

In a statement today the Halifax County Democratic Party announced it will convene a meeting Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to open the floor for nominations in order to make a recommendation to the board of commissioners to fill the unexpired term of the District 3 Commissioner Rachel Hux.

A presidential search committee has narrowed its list of candidates to six finalists to choose to be successor of Halifax Community College President Ervin Griffin Sr.
Griffin will be retiring the first of February.

Early voting edges to 7,000 mark

As of Thursday, 6,647 people in Halifax County have taken advantage of early voting.

Man arrested in Oct. 17 shooting

An October 17 shooting outside Roanoke Rapids resulted in the arrest of a 26-year-old man last week.

Tillmon's Rockfish trial delayed until February

The trial of the only defendant to plead not guilty in the Operation Rockfish police corruption case has now been continued until February, documents in filed in the federal court system show.

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department and its Citizens on Patrol will have two weekend events — one Friday and one Saturday.

New documents in the Operation Rockfish police corruption case say a million dollars worth of heroin was at issue and the purported drugs were loaded into vehicles containing secret compartments.

As the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate a series of fights Monday at the county high school in Gaston, Sheriff Jack Smith confirmed this afternoon approximately 40 students were involved.
