Roanoke Rapids City Council this evening backed a resolution supporting the location of a passenger rail station and service in Weldon.

The Peanut Belt Rural Planning Organization Technical Advisory Council has recommended a proposed Amtrak station in Weldon be put on the state’s Transportation Improvement Plan.

An effort is underway to rekindle Weldon’s longstanding railroad history with a push to bring an Amtrak depot to the town.

No injuries were reported this afternoon when a northbound Amtrak locomotive struck a flatbed trailer just across the North Carolina state line in Greensville County.

A preliminary report on a March 9 Amtrak collision in Halifax backs earlier statements given by the state Highway Patrol on how the crash happened.

Appreciation from town of Halifax

On Monday, March 9, 2015, the Town of Halifax saw one of the largest accidents in our long history occur, as an Amtrak Carolinian Passenger Train, with over 200 people on board, collided with a transfer truck at the NC 903/125 and Hwy 301 crossing in Halifax.

No charges to be filed in collision

Some 25 injured in derailment-collision

An Amtrak locomotive and one of its cars derailed and another car partially derailed in Halifax today after striking the trailer carrying payload of an 18-wheel transfer truck.
