Betty Jean Shurett Akers

Betty Jean Shurett Akers, 91, died Friday September 14, 2018 at Vidant Hospital in Greenville.

Betty was born October 2, 1926 in Rockford, Alabama.

She was the daughter of the late William and Docia Shurett.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years Samuel Henry Akers, brothers Bill Shurett, H.E. Shurett, Tom Shurett, Bobby Shurett, sisters Henry Sue Rudd and Bennie Werner.

She was raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  

She was a proud graduate of the University of Alabama, completing her degree in Nutrition in 3 years. Roll Tide!

Betty was a faithful Christian, a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a cherished friend to many.

She was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids.

Betty worked for many years as the Child Nutrition Director for the Roanoke Rapids and Weldon City Schools.

She was the go to person for many when it came to cooking. She could whip up a mean banana pudding and out of this world Thanksgiving dinners. She enjoyed many meals on Friday night and lunch at Second Street with the girls.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the angels at Brookdale in Greenville for their love and care for the past 2 years.

She is survived by her children Kenny Akers of Charlotte, Shurett Rawlings of Rocky Mount, Mary Pat Langford (Eugene) of Greenville. Betty leaves behind her grandchildren Ken Akers (Christine), Meredith Stokely (Trinity), Holley Akers (Jim), Adam Rawlings (Kerry), Patrick Rawlings and Scott Langford (Lisa). She also leaves behind great grandchildren Maggie Akers, Nathan Stokely and Seth Stokely.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 22 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist With the Rev. Joseph Casteel officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of service in the chapel of the church.  

Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Betty’s memory to the First United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
