NWS: Confidence of life-threatening impacts from Florence continue to increase

The National Weather Service reported in its morning briefing confidence continues to increase life-threatening impacts will be felt across the Carolinas with the arrival of Hurricane Florence.

Those impacts include extreme flash-flooding, river flooding, significant wind, elevated chances for tornadoes and extreme risks for power outages.

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate on Thursday and worsen Thursday night and Friday, according to Raleigh office of the NWS. Impacts include winds, flash flooding the risk of tornadoes and power outages.

River flooding is expected over the weekend and into early next week.

In its key messages for the storm, the NWS says, “Life-threatening, catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding is possible over portions of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic states from late this week into early next week as Florence is expected to slow down as it approaches the coast and moves inland.”

The NWS expects damaging hurricane-force winds along portions of the North Carolina and South Carolina coasts and a hurricane watch is in effect for a part of this area. “Damaging winds could also spread well inland into portions of the Carolinas and Virginia.”

Closings announced

District court in Bertie and Hertford counties has been cancelled for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. No decision has been made on Halifax and Northampton at this point.

Cornerstone Christian will close at noon Wednesday and will be closed Thursday and Friday.

The doors of the post offices in Roanoke Rapids, Gaston and Garysburg will be closed when the window areas are closed and open when the window areas are open.

New Dixie Oil statement

Scott Aman, president of New Dixie Oil, issued an updated statement saying, “First and foremost; as we are all preparing for the impact of Hurricane Florence, may we all pause to remember and give thanks to all those who sacrificed so much including the emergency responders on 9-11. Let us also give thanks to those who continue to serve and sacrifice putting themselves in harm’s way to protect and serve the communities we live in.”

As for fuel supply, Aman said demand due to evacuation and preparation traffic is very high. “Drivers are working extended hours waiting in lines at the terminals. Our branded suppliers have been modestly increasing prices daily since last week.

“Therefore, due to higher product costs and higher freight costs, do not be surprised to see street prices move likewise. Our number one goal at this time is to do all we possibly and safely can to continue to keep fuel at our stores to serve our communities and customers.”
