The Roanoke Rapids Police Department along with the fire department and public works held a back to school cookout in the parking lot of A&D Laundromat in the 100 block of Roanoke Avenue today.

“We want to be good community partners and have positive interactions with the citizens,” Chief Chuck Hasty said. “We want to work with new businesses and highlight things that are of benefit to our community.”

Al Leech, owner of A&D and a mini located inside it, welcomed the cookout. “I think it’s a beautiful thing,” the retired Massachusetts rapid transit officer said.

Leech opened the launderette last year and response has been great, he said. “They thank me for being here. Customers have said no one ever thought so much of them before to put in such a place.”
