The second person wanted in a July murder on Grant Drive outside Roanoke Rapids was taken into custody in Indiana Monday, Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a statement this evening.

Tripp said by telephone tonight why Donovan Gonsalves was in Indiana and what part of the state he was captured in was not readily available.

Gonsalves was apprehended without trouble by Indiana State Police, the sheriff said in the statement.

Claude Luther Celestine was brought back to Halifax County last week after he was apprehended in DeKalb County, Georgia, with assistance from the sheriff’s office there and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Fugitive and Missing Persons Task Force.

The two men had been on the run since the July 16 murder of their associate, Daquinn Blount, a former resident of Roanoke Rapids.

Tripp said this evening he was pleased with cooperative effort which led to the two men being captured. “We greatly appreciate the SBI task force for their assistance and the cooperation of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police. It’s a national network of working together.”

Gonsalves is being held in Indiana until the status of his extradition is determined, Tripp said in the statement.

Celestine had waived extradition to North Carolina after he was caught in Georgia.

Prior to the murder warrant being lodged, he had been charged with obstruction of justice and drug charges.

Marc Anthony Solomon-Cartagena, who lived at the Grant Drive residence where Blount was shot and killed and Gonsalves was injured, had posted bond for Celestine’s release on the obstruction charge while a bondsman posted his bail on drug charges.

Tripp has previously confirmed not only did all four men know each other but evidence shows there was a dispute between Blount and Gonsalves.
