Powell, 20, was captured this morning in the Charlotte area, where he is from, after a SWAT team descended on the residence where he was holed up.
Neither Taylor or the Scotland Neck Police Department could immediately say whether Powell barricaded himself in the residence of family or acquaintances in the area.
The Scotland Neck police confirmed this evening in a statement Charlotte-Mecklenburg police went to the 1200 block of Pointer Ridge Drive in the Catawba Plantation subdivision to arrest Powell, who also has family in Scotland Neck. Based on information received from authorities in Charlotte, Powell barricaded himself inside the home and refused to come out. SWAT officers were called to the scene and later arrested Powell.
“I’m very thankful that no one was injured during the arrest,” Scotland Neck Interim Chief John Tippett said in the statement. “The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department was very instrumental in this case and I thank them for their efforts and assistance.”
Lloyd
With Powell in custody in the Daniels murder case, police continue to search for Lamonte Lloyd, who remains at large. “We now need Lamonte Lloyd to turn himself in to the authorities peacefully,” Tippett said in the statement. Lloyd, 22, has active warrants in the case including murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, the police department said.
Scotland Neck police said it is believed Lloyd may still be in the Scotland Neck or surrounding area.
“We can't rule that out,” Taylor said. “We are exploring all the leads as they come in.”
Lloyd is considered armed and dangerous, Scotland Neck police said in the statement.
Daniels was a potential state's witness in a case where a mistrial was declared in October.
The mistrial declared in the Jimmel Horton case was done so because of a conflict of interest between Sammy Webb, who represented Horton, and his law partner, Jamaal Summey, who represented Daniels. The state planned to call Daniels as a witness in Horton's trial.
Daniels, 24, of Scotland Neck, was shot as he sat in a vehicle near the intersection of Grace and Eleventh streets.
Scotland Neck police, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and the SBI continue to work on the case, the police department said in the statement.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Lloyd is encouraged to call Scotland Neck police at 252-826-4111or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
