James “Buster” Coleman III surrendered Tuesday night in the murder of Rynel Tyreek Gaines.

Captain Bobby Martin of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said Coleman surrendered to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office around 7 p.m. and it is believed he had legal counsel with him.

Coleman will face a charge of murder in the case.

Martin said it is not clear why Coleman, 24, of Weldon, decided to turn himself in and it is unclear where he had been while on the lam. “I'm glad he did,” the captain said of Coleman's decision to surrender. “He's in custody and we can move forward.”

The murder of Gaines, 27, remains under investigation.

Martin he hopes further investigation will help establish motive in the October 23 murder, which occurred around 12:15.

The investigation stemmed from a motor vehicle collision call at Fourth and Madison streets.

When Officer Matt Hunsucker arrived he found the victim in the vehicle unresponsive. Officers discovered Gaines had a gunshot wound and was deceased.
