The state intends to prove Jimmel Horton not only killed Chris Harrison in a 2013 home invasion on Zoo Road South but also killed Monte Hines, who was thought by Halifax County Sheriff's Office investigators to be an assailant in the deadly robbery attempt.

Horton's defense attorney will attempt to show one of those charged as a co-conspirator in the case will prove unreliable as a state's witness.

Horton's trial got under way today after jury selection was completed Monday.

The events that led to Harrison's death unfolded the evening of October 27, 2013, when the victim was “minding his own business watching TV,” Assistant Judicial District 6 District Attorney Keith Werner told the jury in his opening statements.

Harrison resisted Horton and Hines entering after answering a knock at the door and Harrison was shot, a 9mm bullet later recovered from his head, and 9mm casings found outside the door.

Harrison fell at the door and responding deputies could only enter the house from the rear, Werner told jurors.

A line of shell 9mm shell casings were found from the front door to a path where Hines was found dead that morning, a mask on his face and a cell phone in his hand. “Chris was minding his own business,” Werner said.

Sammy Webb, who is representing Horton, told the jurors, “There are people who are going to testify who never gave a statement in two years.”

Webb tried to compare Alston to Pinocchio, but was struck down by an objection from Werner, which Judge Walter H. Godwin Jr. sustained. “He's going to say he was scared, he's going to change his story again and change his story again.”
