The Roanoke Rapids Youth Baseball Association (RRYBA) opened the 2019 Cal-Ripken Southeast Regional 12U Major 70 tournament Wednesday afternoon.

All eight teams hit the field for opening day games. Not only was it physical games, but all eight teams had to battle the high heat.

The eight teams are divided into two four team divisions with the top two after three days advance to the championship bracket set for Saturday at Ledgerwood Complex.

The American Division is made up of: Bill Bond Florida North, Southwest Athletics NC West, Southern Pitt NC East and Williamsburg Virginia.

The National Division is made up of:  Roanoke Rapids NC East, Winter Park Florida South, Bellevue Tennessee East and Laurinburg NC East.

Day one results:

Southwest Athletics NC West beat Southern Pitt NC East 8-5

Winter Park Florida South beat Laurinburg NC East 4-0

Bill Bond Florida North beat Williamsburg Virginia 5-2

Roanoke Rapids NC East beat Bellvue Tennessee East 13-3

 

Roanoke Rapids game summary:

The Roanoke Rapids 12U Allstars defeated Tennessee 13-3 on Wednesday thanks in part to Seth Tickel, who drove in four runners.  Tickle drove in runs on a double in the third, a single in the fourth, and a single in the fifth.

Tennessee opened up scoring in the first inning.  An Roanoke Rapids error scored one run for Tennessee.

In the bottom of the first inning, Roanoke Rapids tied things up at two.  Jackson Midgette singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

Roanoke Rapids pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning.  In the third Tickel doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.

Roanoke Rapids put up five runs in the fourth inning.  Avery Garner, Seth Tickel, Carson Duncan, Jackson Midgette , and Wil White all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Gannon DeBerry was on the pitcher's mound for Roanoke Rapids. He lasted four innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out seven and walking zero.

Campbell was on the mound for Tennessee. He allowed six hits and ten runs over three and a third innings, striking out three.  Dixon threw one inning in relief.

Roanoke Rapids tallied eight hits in the game.  Seth Tickel and Collin Elias each managed multiple hits for Roanoke Rapids, Seth going 3-for-3 and Collin Elias 2-for-3. 

Roanoke Rapids plays their next  game Thursday at 5:30 on Jaycee Field against Florida.
