Woman charged with indoor grow operation

A shots fired call Monday led the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office to discover an indoor marijuana growing operation.

Narcotics Agent A. Harris said in a press release Sergeant S. Rodwell located several men in a wooded area off Faulcon Road shooting high-powered rifles at trees.

Lieutenant George Evans assisted on the call and patted the men down for any other weapons. He discovered a marijuana grinder with a small amount of pot in it. The man was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.

During the investigation the owner of the residence, Angel Leah Bertram, gave Evans written consent to search her house.

Evans located what appeared to be a marijuana grow room in a back bedroom and contacted Harris and Lieutenant Scott Hall.

The room was insulated and had aluminum foil on one side and a hole cut for exhaust. There were dried marijuana plants throughout the room and deputies seized planting materials, a grow light, pipes and Miracle Grow.

Bertram was charged with manufacture marijuana, maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and simple possession of marijuana.

She was given a $6,000 unsecured bond and a September 6 court date.

Harris said citizens who have narcotics complaints may call the narcotics division anonymously at 252-583-2282.
