Citizen Elle: Pit bull earns high mark

Elle is a good citizen and her behavior may mean helping others.

At 2.5 years old, Elle is an American Pit Bull Terrier and has already been recognized as a Canine Good Citizen by the American Kennel Club.

Man arrested in 2009 shooting

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department Tuesday arrested a man for his alleged involvement in an October shooting in the 800 block of Marshall and Carolina streets.

Deputy Chief Adam Bondarek said Joseph Cordell Oglesby faces four counts of discharging a weapon in the city limits and a count of assault with a deadly with intent to kill. He was jailed on $100,000 bond and has an August 25 court date. There were no injuries in the shooting.

Dan, canine officer, dies

A canine officer with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office has died.

Dan, a German shepherd trained in explosives detection, was apparently hit by a car after he was let out of pen sometime Monday, Major Mike Casey said.

Davis in custody for county crimes

The man wanted for questioning in the Stanley White Presbyterian Church fire last week is in custody on $40,000 bond for charges filed by the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

The city will not issue any fines as it comes up with ways to allow Roanoke Avenue merchants to display their wares on sidewalks.

Noise complaints leads to stolen gun

A noise complaint Sunday led Weldon officers to recover a gun stolen from Durham. Captain James Avens said Officer Bob Lufkin and Lieutenant Chris Davis responded to the Interstate Inn.

The state will seek the death penalty against Tony Maurice Gorham in the murders of Maxine McCrary and Nancy Burgess, Halifax County District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey said today.

Four Charged Following Enfield Traffic Stop

A traffic stop today in Enfield resulted in the arrests of four people on marijuana charges.

Lieutenant Chuck Hasty of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Matt Brown was on routine patrol when he stopped the vehicle for an equipment violation.

Emporia and Greensville County have the distinction of having the only certified CSX mega site in Virginia. The distinction is an important one for CSX, which in recent years began a program designed to identify suitable locations for industrial development for large manufacturing operations.
