The momentum for the You Can Too Foundation is gaining and the charitable organization started by former Duke football standout and Weldon native Cedric Jones will begin its first football camp in June.

While Jones could not be in attendance for Wednesday’s 74th annual meeting of the Roanoke Valley of Chamber Commerce, Victor Marrow told the audience the foundation has been registered with the North Carolina Secretary of State as a non-profit and that it is in the process of registering with the IRS as a 501c3 tax-exempt organization.

“The mission of the You Can Too Foundation is to inspire youth in the Roanoke Valley to achieve through academics and athletics,” Marrow said.

Scholarship assistance will start next year and the first football camp for children 6 through 12 will be held June 22. A location has not been set. “Our goal is to reach 150 youth this year,” Marrow said. “We have pro athletes coming in and we need volunteers.”

Chamber President and CEO Ginny Lewis said, “This is going to be a great opportunity for our youth. I really want you to think about it — think about the opportunities that this is going to bring for our youth. This is something that will be growing year after year and expanding into the upper classes.”

With the program Lewis said Jones, a former New England Patriot, “has friends in high places and they have already agreed to come to the table and bring this to Halifax County. We’re very blessed that he wants to give back to this community and through the youth is how he’s going to do it.”
