Dr. Fred Eugene Wier, 74, of Connelly Springs, North Carolina, passed away Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, North Carolina. 

Dr. Wier was a loving, dedicated husband and father and will be missed immeasurably. He offered selfless service to his patients and was known for being kind, gentle, and compassionate. 

Dr. Wier was born in San Antonio, Texas on October 4, 1947 to the late Dr. Vernon St. Clair Wier and Lucy Schultz Wier. He was preceded in death by his stillborn daughter Marissa Danielle Wier. 

After graduating from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, Dr. Wier received his medical degree from Loma Linda School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California and concluded his medical training by completing a general surgery residency at Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. 

Dr. Wier began his practice of surgery in Columbus, North Carolina prior to relocating to Troy, North Carolina where he practiced for eight years before finally settling in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina where he practiced for 30 years prior to retirement. 

Dr. Wier founded Roanoke Valley Surgical Associates in Roanoke Rapids where he cared for the Roanoke Valley Community and surrounding areas. 

While practicing surgery at Halifax Regional Medical Center, now Vidant North, Dr. Wier served as Chief of Surgery and later as Chief of the Medical Staff. 

Dr. Wier was a member of the American Medical Association and the Southeastern Surgical Congress for several years. 

Additionally, Dr. Wier proudly supported the educational system and the local emergency medical service by serving twelve years on the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Board of Trustees and serving two years on the Halifax Emergency Medical Services Board. 

Dr. Wier enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family. 

His hobbies included traveling, photography, canoeing, reading, and more recently playing Sudoku on his Kindle.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 39 years, Rhonda Walker Wier; daughters, Heather Ann Wier Weese and her husband Dan of Franklin, Tennessee; Laura Ashlock Wensell and her husband Max of Midway, Tennessee; sons, Justin Paul Wier and his wife Kendall of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Jason Lee Wier and his wife Erin of Wilmington, North Carolina; Ryan Lee Ashlock and his wife Laura of Hendersonville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Katherine Ashlock, Lia Ashlock, Madeline Ashlock, James Wensell, Eli Wensell, and Grayson Weese; siblings, Carol Wier, Alice Zabudsky, Vernon Wier, Jr., and Rick Wier; nephews Don Zabudsky and family, Keith Wier, David Wier and family, niece Pam Zabudsky Humphreys and family.

A service for Dr. Wier will be held at Fletcher Seventh-day Adventist Church located at 1141 Howard Gap Road, Hendersonville, North Carolina on January 30, 2022 at 2:00 pm. A memorial service for Dr. Wier will also be held in Roanoke Rapids at a future date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Vidant North Development Council, Vidant North Hospital, 250 Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina 27870. Donations should be made in the memory of Dr. Fred Wier, Department of Surgery.
