An Enfield man is in jail without the opportunity after he was charged with the murder of a person with whom he had a lonstanding beef.

Undray L. Batts Jr., 27, also faces a count of discharging a firearm in the town limits in the Sunday shooting death of Orrick Parker, who is also from Enfield, town police Chief James Ayers said.

Ayers said the shooting occurred between 1 and 1:30 p.m. at Meyers Park off Bell Street.

Batts had just finished playing basketball when Parker, who was in his 20s, came to the park.

Ayers said that’s when Batts fatally shot Parker. The police chief declined to say whether words were exchanged between the two. He also declined to disclose the nature of the bad blood between them.

Ayers said the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Rocky Mount Police Department were instrumental in locating Batts. Batts was found in Rocky Mount a couple of hours after the shooting.

Batts is scheduled for a first appearance in Halifax County District Court Tuesday. He is also scheduled for a district court appearance in Halifax for marijuana and driving while license revoked counts on August 24, according to the state court calendar.

On September 9 he is scheduled to appear in Nash County District Court on speeding and an expired license count, according to the court calendar.
