Halifax County now has 17 confirmed cases of COVID-19, health system Director Bruce Robistow said in an afternoon update.

He had reported this morning the count was at 16.

As part of the 17 cases, three are at Caledonia Correctional Institution in Tillery, said John Bull, communications officer for adult corrections with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Bull said in an email response to rrspin.com that as of this morning there are 14 positive cases within DPS with three being confirmed positive at Caledonia. “They are in isolation per the guidelines of the CDC and the state health department.”

Last week DPS reported one inmate at Caledonia was tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Meanwhile, in his update today, Robistow said, “Please be sure to promote the stay at home order, social distancing, hand washing (and other measures) to everyone you know. All these efforts are working but we need to do better.”

Gaston curfew

Gaston police Chief C.L. Dixon said this afternoon the town will start a curfew which begins Thursday at 9 p.m. The curfew will run from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. until further notice.

“We ask all citizens and visitors to please abide by North Carolina Governor Cooper's Executive Order 121 and please remain at home unless you are conducting essential business in accordance with this and Governor Cooper's executive order 121.”

He also said, “If you are under quarantine by any state or local health department please abide by these directives for the health and safety of our community.”

The curfew is in line with the governor’s order and state law and follows closely a Northampton County curfew which applies to unincorporated areas. “As such, the town of Gaston has created our own curfew.”

Said Dixon: “The Gaston Police Department wants to keep its citizens safe during this and cut down on the spread of the virus.”

Northampton County

In its 4 p.m. update, the Northampton County Health Department said there are currently 55 confirmed positive cases of COVID-19.

The additional case is in isolation. Currently, the majority of all cases continue to have only mild symptoms with many being asymptomatic.

Six out of the 55 cases have been deemed recovered.

Further testing has been done and individual results are pending.
