It will be a special night for the seniors on the football team as many of them will be saying good-bye to the fans that have watched them over the past few years grow into mature players who won a conference championship in 2009.
They will also be saying good-bye to a coach that has stood by them as a mentor, leader and teacher. Coach Russell Weinstein set a clear set of goals for his team at the beginning of the year. He focused his team on back to back Northern Carolina Conference championships, which would be a first in the history of the school.
He then set his team’s sight on a 10-win season, which would also be a first in school history.
Coach Weinstein told his players following the Bunn win, “You have taken the steps to control your own destiny and now it is up to each of you.”
The Jackets (8-1) overall, 4-0 in the conference will face North Johnston (8-1) overall, and 3-1 in the conference.
North Johnston defeated Northwest Halifax 42-0 last Friday night. The Jackets are coming off a bye week after defeating Bunn, 48-21.
The Jackets will take the field on what promises to be a historical night. The halftime ceremonies will include inducting Coach Don Curtis as an inaugural member of the Roanoke Rapids Athletic Hall of Fame.
Curtis served at Roanoke Rapids High School from 1957 to 1995 and coached multiple sports at the high school to include track, J.V. basketball and varsity football. Athletic Director Tim Bennett has said that all former players are welcome to join Curtis at halftime on the field.
