The Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jacket football team will get a much deserved weekend of rest with a bye week this week following their big win over the Bunn Wildcats, 49-21.

The Jackets will return home for their last regular season home game at Hoyle Field on October 29 at 7:30 p.m.

The night will be a special night for the 11 seniors on the Jacket squad as they continue to strive for the Jackets first 10-win season.

The Jackets’ opponent, North Johnston, has surprised coaches and sportswriters this year.

It was just a year ago that the North Johnston Panthers finished 2-9. Coach Tom Nelson has done a great job working with the youth and the Panthers are 7-1 with their only loss to Bunn.

The Panthers playmaker is their quarterback, Jacques Alston. He is heading for a 1000-yard rushing season after rushing for 584 yards in just six games. The Panthers’ offense has averaged scoring 40 points per game.

They will be facing a Jacket defense that has given up a total of 101 points in eight games with most of the points coming from the Tarboro loss.

The Jackets’ defense has been tough, led by seniors Ryan Howell, J.J. Patterson, Justin Rawles and D.J. Epperson.

The Jackets’ job will be to contain the speedster Alston who led the Panthers to a 41-20 victory over Louisburg this past Friday.

The Panthers will also be faced with a Jacket offense that is averaging 48 points per game in eight games.

The Panthers’ defense has only allowed 80 points to be scored in eight games under the leadership of end Phillip Parrish and linebacker Blake Faircloth.

The Panther defense will be taking on their toughest assignment that they have had all year with the Jacket offense.

The Jackets have one of the most explosive offenses in the conference. Led by Rawles and the running of Tyrell Everette they are awfully hard to stop. The Bunn Wildcats could not stop the Jackets’ offensive attack. A.J.Alston and Clay Lockamon have become additional weapons that Rawles has used, passing the ball to each of them and causing headaches for opposing defenses.

The Jackets have a 7-1 overall record, matching North Johnston’s 7-1 record. The Jackets are currently in first with a 4-0 conference record while North Johnston is tied with Bunn at 3-1.
