Let's be nice to criminals William Eleczko

OK. It seems there are some people who think noise complaint violations and the smell of marijuana creeping from a door crack isn’t probable cause.

It seems some people in the public think they know more about the law than those trained to enforce the law do.

Well, according to state statutes, marijuana is still illegal and if you possess it, especially 62 grams of it, well, I’m no lawyer, but that’s breaking the law, and when the acrid smell comes wafting through crack and crevice, nook and cranny, you might as well place a sign on the door that says, “Arrest me now.”

Maybe those who condemn law enforcement for doing their jobs would like a free pass, a Be Nice to Criminals Week, if you will.

I will start the lobbying.

Yes, you read correctly. It's only fair, in this land of freedom and opportunity, to give criminals a fair shake. After all, they're people, too.

With Be Kind to Criminals Week come some rules of engagement.

Number 1: Law enforcement shall call a criminal 10 minutes before arrival.

This will allow the criminal equal opportunity to hide everything — stash and cash, scrap metal and stereos, dishwashers and lawn tractors — and appear like the rest of the law abiding citizens, or high tail it for the hills to stay with an unsuspecting relative who believes you’re the good son or daughter when you’re really on the lam. It's only fair because it's Be Nice To Criminals Week.

Number 2: Give each criminal a one free crime card.

Everyone makes an error in life, even it’s just sitting beside an abandoned warehouse clearing your head or shooting at your cousin. It's not their fault they're new at the business and aren't good at being sneaky or just haven’t seemed to learn that they aren’t that smart because, and I don’t know the odds, even the good criminals get caught. Prisons are full of smart people. They deserve the opportunity because it's Be Nice To Criminals Week.

Number 3: Remove theft from our penal code. Theft is only a part of wealth distribution. We all need to do our part. We cannot allow some to have more than others. We cannot let those who work hard for the money enjoy it. It's just not fair because, after all, it's Be Nice To Criminals Week.

In this time of suffering commerce and economy, we need to support all new business because we are definitely supporting the criminals whether we want to or not. Just ask the latest robbery victim or the woman who did nothing to her boyfriend but got her jaw broken.

Crime is an up and coming opportunity, with the chance to employ many, especially in the prison woodworking or license plate shop. Freedom, opportunity, equality is what our country stands for and there are those who believe the ones who violate our rights should be entitled to them, too. OK, since it’s National Be Kind to Criminals Week, I’ll bite, and let’s see how those who complain the loudest like it when their car is broken into — William Eleczko

Quoting Maureen:
Any criminal trying to rob my house gets a 21-gun salute! Then we call the police to come collect the bodies.

Wow. At least you are honest about it.

Well written piece! Mr. T-One, no one is saying that officers are perfect. There are corrupt officers, just like there are corrupt teachers, preachers, car salesmen, etc. But yes, the odor of marijuana (as in the hotel case) does constitute probable cause. Everyone has been screaming the injustices of these people getting caught or how they got caught, but when your house, car or building is broke into who will you call. I bet it will not be Ghost Busters, but those officers that people on this site are condemning. Thank you officers for doing your jobs and protecting me. And ps I fully support the legalization of marijuana, but as of now it is still illegal.

Love it! Does the free crime card cover murder? If so, what do I need to do to be considered a criminal? Or will my sealed juvenile record be enough to get me my pass? Yes. I have a sealed juvenile record. I made a dumb decision. Not out of not knowing but out of not caring, and the Honorable Judge Paul McCoy gave me a second chance. And I took it! Straightened up and realized crime might pay sometimes, but the benefits stink and restitution is not a LONG rest time but a payback to those wronged with interest rates that make even the IRS envious! Great piece sir!!

Have you ever heard of Kathryn Johnston of Atlanta? an elderly woman (92yrs old) who was shot by undercover police officers in her home. Three officers entered her home in what was later described as a "botched" drug raid. Officers cut off burglar bars and broke down her door using a no-knock warrant. Johnston fired at them and they fired in response firing 39 shots. none of the officers were injured by her gunfire, but she was killed by the cops. Injuries to the cop were later attributed to "friendly fire" from each others' weapons. One of the officers planted marijuana in Johnston's house after the shooting. Later investigations found that paperwork stating that drugs were present at Jhonston's house, which had been the basis for the raid, had been falsified. The officers later admitted to having lied when they submitted cocaine as evidence claiming that they had bought it at Johnston's house. you can google the Kathryn Johnston story.
