A Roanoke Rapids man was charged with drug counts Wednesday after allegedly throwing marijuana and crack from his vehicle in the South Rosemary area.

Officer Roy Ball of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department charged Jason Javar Richardson, 24, of Branch Avenue, with possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule II, simple possession of schedule VI, driving while license revoked and aggressive driving.

He was jailed on $5,000 secured bond and has a March 16 court date.

Captain Andy Jackson said Ball observed Richardson run through a traffic light and ease the vehicle across the center line and throw something out the window.

Ball retrieved the bags and another officer observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed near Church and Vine and watched it run a stop sign at Smith Church Road near the hospital.

The police department also reported the following:

A 21-year-old on his way from Bobby's Supermarket to a friend's house on Oak Street was accosted by a man who asked him for a cigarette. When the victim refused the man punched him and two other men assaulted him, causing multiple lacerations to his chest, neck and back.

The assault occurred Sunday night around 11:15 p.m. Police continue to investigate.
