Sutherland Sutherland Roanoke Rapids Police Department

A Roanoke Rapids woman who allegedly locked her two children in a room with fecal matter on the floors and walls has been charged with two counts of child neglect.

“It was probably one of the worst child neglect cases they’ve seen,” Deputy Chief Adam Bondarek said, referring to the officers who investigated the case. “The conditions were egregious. The children were locked in their room unattended. There was fecal matter on the walls and floor.”

Lauren Sutherland remained in the Halifax County Jail this morning on $5,000 bond. The 20-year-old woman has an October 29 court date.

She was arrested Tuesday by detectives Jeff Baggett and Corey Dixon, along with Officer Mike Moseley.

Bondarek said it appears the alleged neglect has been going on for some time, probably longer than when officers were notified.

He said the two preschool aged children were not injured and are in custody of the county Department of Social Services.

He declined further comment.

Absolutely rediculous! Hopefully justice will be served! Children do not deserve this!

i had a child at 14 and i don't lock my children in the room; its not the age that matters, its how you raise your children.

Why did it go on for so long? Everyone on here has had a valid point. I don't believe it has anything to do with her age or how she was raised because if I remember correctly, her parents were super supportive of her while she was pregnant and being the mother of a daughter who gave birth at the age of 16, age does not always play a part in the ability to be a good mother. I pray that the children can be taken care of by family members and are not sent to foster care. They did not ask to be brought into the world and they need to be loved and reassured that none of this is their fault. Frankie, I hope that you can get custody of your child, and maybe you should consider taking the sibling as well. I do hope that you have you life straight as well because these children do not need any more instability in their lives. I know you and your family will love them and take great care of them. I am praying for all involved and hope the young woman finds peace & learns to be a good mom.

I can't even believe that someone could actually do that to a child. If she didn't want to have to take care of the ones that she has then WHY wouldn't she try to prevent getting pregnant a third time. What they need to do is take the one that she is pregnant with now away from her right after she has it. What is also said is that people want get kids and they try hard to have them and cant and then the ones that God blesses with kids have to do this crap to them. She needs to be locked in a room without a toilet or sink and have to go through what she put them kids through. My heart and prayers really goes out to these kids.....

Her family is denying fecal matter?? What about the fact that the children where locked up? Are they denying that too? Do they think making excuses for her is going to help her in the future?

I am seriously confused. She only has a bond of $5,000 for grossly neglecting human children, a man throws puppies away and has a bond of $35,000, when did human life not mean anything ? We show little regard or respect for human life let alone one another. This is so sad, as bad as people want to have children and cannot for whatever reasons, this is upsetting to say the least

What's said is that she is pregnant again with her 3rd child. It is nothing but a continuous cylce.
