A Massachusetts woman died in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 95 Saturday, according to the state Highway Patrol. Three passengers were injured.

Joann Bouchard,68, of Falls River, was a left rear passenger in a 2005 Jeep Liberty driven by Almerinda Tenchara, 71, a report by Trooper T.D. “Bo” Forsht said.

Around noon the driver was attempting to merge left. There was a vehicle in the blind spot and Tenchara swerved right, losing control between the 161 and 162 mile markers in the southbound lane. The Jeep crossed a small ravine and headed to the wood line where it struck two large trees, Sergeant R.E. Dudley said.

Bouchard died of injuries from the collision.

Tenchara, who was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center and then to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Another passenger, Beverly Oliveria, 63, was airlifted to Duke University Medical Center in Durham while another, Claudette Bison, 74, was taken to Pitt.

The extent of their injuries were not known.

The group of women were traveling to Myrtle Beach.
