This year it was Vincent, the son of Eddie and Lisa Vincent, who is the city clerk.
Vincent starts college at East Carolina University August 24 and will pursue a degree in political science, a course road he hopes will lead him to a law degree.
“I was excited about it,” the Roanoke Rapids High School graduate said of the $500 which will be used for books. He also received a $750 scholarship from the Optimists Club.
Vincent maintained a 3.6 to 3.7 grade point average at Roanoke Rapids.
The reason he wants to be a lawyer is simple. “I’m a good arguer. It’s an interest I’ve always had. I’m into politics.”
The money for the scholarship was raised by employees through fundraisers held throughout the year.
One of them was a hot dog sale at the disc dog event, said Kathy Kearney, human resources director for the city.
On September 17 the committee will have another fundraiser at the Kirkwood Adams Community Center beginning at 11:30 a.m. Five dollars will buy two hot dogs, chips, drink and a candy bar. The event is open to the public.
