The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office also charged another man in the breaking and entering that led to the alleged assault, Lieutenant Chuck Hasty said.
Deputies C.E. Carroll and Hebert Williams responded to the area of Huckleberry Bottom Road and learned Elvin Maurice Alston, 23, and Jerry L. Jefferson, 20, both of Roanoke Rapids, entered a house without the owner’s consent.
Alston allegedly assaulted the woman, who was not seriously injured, and the men left.
Carroll left to obtain warrants and Deputy Williams was dispatched a second time because the men were back at the house, but left before Williams could get back.
The officers set up a perimeter and waited for Deputy Jason Keeter and his dog Brody to arrive.
As Brody searched, the men were seen running across Davie Woods Road and were taken into custody in a backyard without incident.
Alston was charged with breaking and entering, injury to property, assault on a female and give a malt beverage to an underaged person. That charge reflects him allegedly buying for Jefferson. Hasty said both men were allegedly drunk when they entered the house. Alston was also served with an outstanding order for arrest. He was jailed on $5,000 bond and given court dates of April 18 and May 10.
Jefferson was charged with breaking and entering, injury to property, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, conspiracy and possession of malt beverage by a person 19 or 20 years old. Jefferson was given a bond of $2,500 and a court date of May 10.
