Sergeant R.E. Dudley said Trooper Scott Richardson was headed east on Highway 158 back to Roanoke Rapids when a westbound Dodge Charger passed him going 84 miles per hour near a gentleman's club.
Richardson turned around to pursue the vehicle and, as he gave chase, had to pass a Hummer in front of him.
While making the pass he noticed two pedestrians, one who was walking in the roadway, shortly before 4:30.
Richardson swerved his vehicle to miss the pedestrian and ended up in the wood line, hitting tree after tree with the car going end over end.
One tree penetrated the passenger side of the vehicle at least 8 to 10 inches, Dudley said. He was trapped in vehicle for at least a half hour. "He has multiple lacerations, nothing life threatening, a lot of cuts and scars and bruises. Scott's lucky to be alive."
Why the people were walking at that hour remains unknown, but investigating troopers did talk to them to corroborate the story, Dudley said.
The pedestrians said it appeared to be a silver colored Charger. "I don't think we'll ever find it," Dudley said.

OK you say it was necessary for him to swing around on the car, but want to know the speed? Of coarse he had to go faster than the original car was going to catch up to it, and based on what I have gleamed in my life I'd say the idiot that was doing 84 in a 55 to start with probably sped up after seeing the Trooper turn on him. Most people like that aren't going to realize that they were going that fast and go OOppps and pull over and own up for it. And as far as on a dark county road, does not the law apply here as well? Or should we throw our hands up and say too heck with those raodways and not worry if that original idiot hits some poor person who might have to use that road to get home on. Let's just say they should have lived in the city next time someone gets hit by a speeder, or drunk driver if it happens on some" dark county road" Let's use some of that gray matter floating around inside the roac you call a head please......
