A trip to Wilson Monday night turned deadly for a Roanoke Rapids family when the truck they were traveling in went off the side of Interstate 95.

Trooper J.K. Brown of the state Highway Patrol said Yvonne Riggins, 57, died from injuries sustained in the crash, which occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. near Highway 561. She died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville after being airlifted.

The 2003 Dodge went through the ditch and then hit a line of pine trees before bursting into flames.

Dexter Riggins, 19, the only person in the crash who was not airlifted to Pitt, made sure everyone was out of the truck, Brown said. He was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Despite the truck becoming engulfed, none of the injuries sustained appeared to be from flames, Brown said. They appeared to be trauma injuries.

Brown would only confirm Yvonne Riggins was a passenger in the truck. Investigation continues to determine who was driving the pickup when it went off the road and what caused the crash to occur.

Brown said those in the truck were all family members who lived in the same house.

Gregory Riggins, 28; James Reid, 61, and Freda Riggins, 25, were airlifted to Pitt. Brown said it appears they are all in stable condition and don’t have life threatening injuries.

My wife and i went to see Fredda Sunday and she was in good spirits. She still cannot walk yet and will need a lot of rehab before she can. She still has the same beautiful smile she always has. Get well soon.

My prayers are with this family through their difficult time. May God be with them. I only knew Freda, but she was the most pleasant young lady I have met. She always has a smile on her face. I really hope she and her family can find peace with what has happened.

So much death in one week...God in heaven, watch over the family of the victims of this accident. And the Japanese people who are suffering in the aftermath of the earthquake-tsunami horror.
