An investigation into drug complaints Friday led to three arrests and the seizure of felony amounts of marijuana at a local motel.

Captain Andy Jackson said Roanoke Rapids Police Officer Roy Ball went to room 214 of the Carolina Inn on Jackson Street shortly before 4 p.m. to investigate a tip on narcotics trafficking.

When he and Officer Gerald Morris and Sergeant Richard White arrived, one of the people who was later arrested went to the bathroom and the officers heard a window go up.

Investigating officers, also assisted by Lieutenant Ozzie Morgan, located the marijuana allegedly thrown from the window. They also located paraphernalia such as digital scales and baggies.

They seized 34 grams of marijuana in two baggies and two nickel bags.

Charged were Devin Williams, 20, Elizabeth Sledge, 51, and Charles Thomas, 30.

Sledge and Thomas listed addresses of 214 Carolina Inn while Williams listed his address as the 1004 Vance Street.

The relationship between Sledge and Thomas was not clear, nor was it clear how long drug activities were allegedly ongoing in the room.

Williams and Thomas face charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule VI, felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. They were jailed on $5,000 secured bond and have September 14 court dates.

Sledge faces charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana and maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance. She was jailed on $6,000 bond and has the same court date as Williams and Thomas.

Closing comments on this story. The last comment contained several errors of fact. The prohibition of marijuana goes back further than the 1960s and was tied more to the hemp and petroleum side of production than it was pharmaceutical manufacturing. Thanks for your comments — Lance Martin

The only reason why things are the way it is: is cause people follow orders and never question the authority. No one sees the man or woman making the rule they just follow. Weed was made illegal in late 60's early 70's because the people who make medicine lobbied in washington to make it illegal. Read up on the medicinal purposes. Use the right way many people would not have to go to the doctors. Alcohol is one of America's number one killers and it's legal because they can regulate it, plus it makes people sick(good for the Pharmacy)if any thing should be illegal it should be Alcohol. It's what you call population control. to many people not enough resources. Thats why they target weed cause it stimulates peace and heals the body a natural antibiotic that grows naturally on God's green Earth no processing needed.

Quoting Maureen:
People who want to work for good companies that pay well have to be able to pass a drug screening. We could have the best job opportunities imaginable here, but much of the potential workforce couldn't pass a urine test! Ever think that's why employers stay away?

Where at a food joint???? give me a break the only place you can make any so called money is if you get a job and the pappermill or a nurse. Since I have turned 18 I drive an hour to work, if there was money to be made in RR why would I have to leave town for the past 8 years to work...i make $25 an hour tell me where you can make that much....hell if you can find me a job i will quit mine

I do not understand why everyone is so concerned with the selling of marijuana. There are worse drugs out there and the only arrests I see being made are for cannabis. Why not use resources, time, and money to arrest and prosecute crack and cocaine dealers in the area? I know why! The police and the government are more concerned over people getting "high" off marijuana which has the potential to lift this country out of debt. If it was so bad, then why did the government grant pharmaceutical companies the opportunity to test and use "thc" to create new drugs that are less harmful to the human body than the pills currently on the market which can have adverse side effects and lead to death. The last time I checked, you cannot overdose on marijuana. I do not even think I have ever heard of a death from smoking marijuana. It's the same as alcohol. It gives you a feeling of euphoria and what you do afterwards while intoxicated is your responsibility, not the drugs or alcohol.

.......Unless you have a court order against someone who has beaten you, women are not allowed to stay at hannahs place. How messed up is that? Furthermore I dont understand the anguish connected to marijuana sales in the area as it is now medically legal in sixteen states. Would we as concerned citizens rather someone run a shot (liquor) house for children and irresponsible adults to abuse alcohol when more violent crimes are committed by drunks that by true marijuana smokers? Halifax county will never take a honest stand against users of any kind because they make too much money off of their stupidity. Without constant stereotypical bad guys and girls, their jobs would be cut and they would find themselves behind the counter of a mcdonalds like the rest of us who attempt to live our lives properly.

You know, I completely agree that it saddens me to see such stories about people selling drugs in halifax county but the saddest part is that it will never stop. Why? Well first of all the only jobs available to the uneducated public include fast food, service stations, and retail jobs. Im not sure if city leaders understand how hard it is to make ends meet on one or even two of these stressful jobs but it is near impossible. Roanoke rapids needs a nice factory that will create more than a hundred jobs. Maybe then there will be an alternative to the dirty way of life. Another thing that RR lacks which would really help break the cycle of drug use is a cheap yet fun form of entertainment for our youth. There is nothing for our local teenagers to do but catch a buzz! They need something else to do! I always see people complaining about how RR has turned out, instead of complaining lets help these people get on track. Though its terrible to sell illegal drugs there is no shelter for women
