Lingering thunderstorms Wednesday night caused more damage across Halifax County, including a lightning spawned fire which destroyed a single-wide mobile home in Enfield.

The five occupants of the house on Will Richards Road were not injured and stayed with neighbors. The Red Cross is offering them assistance, according to Tina Hinton, emergency management coordinator for Halifax County.

The fire occurred around 8 p.m.

Enfield Volunteer Fire Chief Ronnie Locke said the family was able to salvage a few items.

Reports of power outages in Enfield began coming in shortly after 11:45 p.m.

In Roanoke Rapids lightning struck a house on Carolina Street, blowing up a water heater.

Lightning also struck a shed on East 11th Street in Roanoke Rapids, Hinton said.

Fishing Creek Bridge on Highway 561 was flooded.

Hinton said more storms are possible through Saturday. “We've had more lightning strikes this year than we've had in a long time.”
