The new law, according to Captain Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, goes into effect as many schools across the state, including Roanoke Rapids, begin.
Jackson said the police department has had numerous complaints in the past of motorists speeding in school zones, particularly around Belmont and Chaloner.
Because speed limits in school zones vary depending on the school's location, it is up to the motorist to be aware of the posted speeds, Jackson said. Motorists also must be aware pedestrians have the right of way in a crosswalk.
“Everyone needs to work together,” Jackson said, explaining children need to look both ways before crossing the street and children who walk to school should use sidewalks. Children who ride their bikes to school should wear their helmet and use a bike lock.
There is to be no profanity and there is to be no character assassination even if the person being written about is a suspect in a crime.
