Roanoke Rapids police have filed a murder warrant against Herman Lee “Smurf” Edwards in the Wednesday night shooting death of Lorenzo Tann Jr.

Police say Edwards, who has a lengthy criminal record and is considered armed and dangerous, has been known to cross dress to conceal his identity.

Captain Andy Jackson said the police department filed the warrant against Edwards over the weekend through witness and physical evidence. There is no evidence to suggest Edwards allegedly killed Tann while dressed as a woman.

Edwards is a black male standing approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing between 180 pounds to 200 pounds. He has a close haircut now, unlike the photos currently being circulated which show him in dreadlocks.

He is known to frequent the Mill Village of Roanoke Rapids, Scoco Park and Maria Avenue in Weldon, the area of the old cemetery near the housing projects in Weldon and Northampton County, possibly the Seaboard area.

“We've been working on this matter all last week and all through the weekend, running downs leads, tips, any information to capture him,” interim police Chief Jeff Hinton said. “All our officers have done an outstanding job staying on top of this.”

Hinton said assistance in the case has come from the sheriff's offices in Halifax and Northampton counties, the Weldon and Seaboard police departments and the State Bureau of Investigation as well as other state agencies.

Since Edwards has an outstanding warrant in the murder of Brandon Tyrone Peterson in Weldon, police consider him to be armed and dangerous and, Hinton said, in his flight from law enforcement is known to dress as a woman.

Asked by rrspin.com whether Edwards has either a physical or mental hit list of people he wants to take out, Jackson said, “There's been some talk about that on the street but nothing I can verify.”

Anyone who sees Edwards should call their local law enforcement agency or 911.

Crimestoppers offers up to a $1,000 leading to the arrest of wanted suspects, Jackson said. “There doesn't have to be a conviction.”

Hinton said police are still trying to establish a motive in the case.

It is so sad that this young man is on the run for taking lives. He needs to turn his self in so it won't be another murder trying to catch him.I just feel if he is spotted he might be killed on the spot. What he did was wrong but it will also wrong for him to be gun down. God is our judge and our jury. The Law Enforcers shouldn't have to be in a gun battle with this man. They have families too. All i can say is god bless and officers and people be safe. My prayers are with you all at this time.
