Captain Andy Jackson said only one person police interviewed today said they heard something that sounded like firecrackers in the community. The woman, however, did not call police and the shots led to the victim, John Mills II, 56, being shot multiple times in the arm and lower back, according to Detective Jeff Baggett.
Mills, who was getting ready for bed around 10:30 p.m. when he was shot, wasn't discovered injured until this morning when a relative went to check on him. Mills had no phone to call for help and Baggett said he was either incapacitated from his injuries or was afraid to go outside for fear whoever was responsible may been outside.
Investigators counted mored than a dozen bullet shot into the house at 102 Duke Street from what is believed to be a high powered rifle.
Jackson said it is not clear whether this was a drive-by style shooting or whether the gun was fired from outside a car. There are tire marks that Baggett, the lead investigator in the case, continues to look into.
The latest update on Mills was that he was being prepared for surgery at a hospital outside the area.
Police currently have no motive and no suspects.
Up to a $1,000 reward is being offered for information on the shooting. Callers do not have to give their names and may leave information by calling Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
