The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office today seized one of Lafayette Gatling’s charter busses after the former operator of the Roanoke Rapids Theatre failed to pay his 2010 taxes to the county.

Sheriff Jeff Frazier said Deputy Fred Whitaker served papers to seize the bus this morning. It was located at Pope Funeral Home.

“We go seize property to offset the debt,” Frazier said.

County Tax Collector Pamela M. Harris said the taxes are owed by Gatling Charter Incorporated, which the Chicago businessman was running out of the theater before he was ousted last fall for failing to make his payments on the venue.

Gatling owes the county $12,588.97, Harris said. The taxes were due in September and became delinquent in January.

The bus at the courthouse parking lot is one of two Gatling has registered in the company’s name. The other bus has not been located, Harris said.

Harris talked to Gatling last week and he was supposed to call back but failed to do so.

Gatling and the city are involved in a lawsuit against each other.

The city claims Gatling failed to honor the contract he had with the city to run the venue. Gatling claims the city breached its contract with him.

Gatling’s last theater payment was in May for $35,000. He still owes the city $539,419.05.

Seriously, we are not upset with the process or the fact that the property was taken. How many others did the sheriff seize property on this week, were are their pictures or their names in the paper. Doing the process isn't the problem being treated fair is the issue. A source in the sheriff's dept. said they targeted Gatling and Jeff and other staff was in the office laughing and celebrating over what he didn't do anything. Big deal the bus was towed, Gatling has it back. Maureen is correct instead of being mad with Gatling, all of you need to put the blame where it belongs YOUR elected officials that made the stupid deal with Parton and an equally not smart one with Gatling and if the court deems that he owes the city anything then he will deal with it at that time. All the facts are not known yet, they will be in court as with the deal with Parton the citizens do not know what went on behind closed doors in this matter.

If Gatling still owes the city over $500k, it's a pity the bus also held as security against that debt. I guess it was totally unsecured, which is another error we can lay at the feet of the people who put that bad deal together.

What is with all of the hype? The sheriff's office did what they do everyday. They go out and seize vehicles of people who don't pay their county taxes. The only difference in the case, is that Gatling was the one that owed taxes. And of course they get tow trucks to tow the cars in, because the county does not have a tow truck. This whole process is the only way that the county can get people to pay their taxes. Instead of being upset at this process, you should be upset at the people not paying their taxes. They are the ones that cause the "Tax Payers" to have to pay more taxes.

Bill, no I don't so---read the article that exactly what they did and it was taken back by Gatling the next day even though the sheriff dept. held it illegally after the taxes were paid.

Editor's note: As of 10:50 this morning, Sheriff Jeff Frazier confirmed no payment has been received from Mr. Gatling.

Well, it looks like Jeff can save his ink and time on selling that bus because the hot news is that Gatling has paid the taxes owed in FULL as of yesterday (2/23/2011). I don't play basketball, but it looks the call on this game would go something like, Gatling scores a long one from half court. swoooooooosh, nothing but NETS!!!!!!!!

Now let's see if they auction the bus off for 1/50th its value, or if they try to sell it for what its really worth.
