An out of school suspension coordinator for Northwest Halifax High School has been fired after he was charged today with indecent liberties with a minor.

Joe Edmondson Jr., 56, of Rocky Mount, was charged following an investigation by School Resource Officer Daniel Jones.

Lieutenant Chuck Hasty of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said the crime, which allegedly consisted of inappropriate behavior with a juvenile, was reported May 26.

The crime allegedly occurred on May 25 at the school, located off Highway 48 in Aurelian Springs.

Edmondson was jailed on $2,000 bond and has a September 14 court date.

Halifax County Schools spokesman Keith Hoggard said Edmondson was fired from his job, which he had held since the beginning of the school year.

He was coordinator for a program which allowed children who were suspended from school for short periods to remain in school rather than face the potential of getting into more trouble on the streets.

Hoggard said while the new program has not been evaluated yet, he doesn't think it will hurt the initiative.

Hoggard said the alleged crime occurred in Edmondson's classroom.

I am a female student at Northwest Halifax High School. I have been in his class many times. I truly dont beleive he will do a thing. He always talked about his church and his wife. He was always there to help not harm. This really hurt me to my heart to see him like this. I hope it not the truth. My heart says it not. But the truth will come out someday.

I used to be a student at Northwest Halifax High School. during my senior year in 2003, I am heard rumors of this occurring on school grounds. After seeing this case, I am starting to think that some of those rumors may have been true..........

How ironic is it that we have a person with such low impulse control that he uses his position of authority to violate the very children he is assigned to protect. To the children of America...we as good parents we enforce rules in an effort to prevent you from becoming this kind of predator....through you we are striving to create a world free from such scum.
