It is part of a daylong celebration called Historic Weldon Main Street Market Day, which begins at 10 a.m. and runs through 4 p.m.
The day is set aside to welcome 14 new businesses to the town, Mayor Julia Meacham said this afternoon, and to show the cleanup efforts that have taken place throughout the town.
In preparation for the event a new welcome sign paid for by the NC STEP program has been put up in the triangle and two more were being erected today, one off Interstate 95 and one on Highway 301, Meacham said.
The celebration also honors the work the town board has done to clean up the town. “That was our mission to help Weldon grow and move forward,” the mayor said. “We have worked together and supported each other's ideas and torn down old, dilapidated businesses and houses to make us more attractive.”
The activity on Monument Hill, however, is protected until the 10:30 a.m. unveiling, the mayor said. “It's something that will promote Weldon as a tourist destination that's part of our history.”
The events will be taking place along Washington Avenue. Second and Third streets will be closed. A classic car drive-in will be held on Second Street. Children's inflatable attractions will be held behind the police station and there will food and craft vendors as well as music.
Meacham is excited about the event and the direction the town is heading. “It's rewarding to be mayor of a little town, to see a drastic difference. I'm thrilled people want to move here and be a part of our community.”
