Halifax County Manager Tony Brown said today the paving will cost the county $7,000 but still expects the project to be under the $87,000 budgeted.
Probation and parole moved into the building at the end of last month. Paving is expected to begin within two weeks and Brown said there are a few finishing touches the county must do.
Brown said the county received a bill from the state for $2,079 for a July payment, although the county agreed to pay through June 30, which is noted in a January lease agreement with the state.
In February, however, the county agreed to renovate the former food stamp building after the state informed officials in January it would no longer pay the lease for the old building, located in the Forest Hills Shopping Center in Roanoke Rapids.
With an annual lease payment of $26,640 and annual operating costs of $15,000, commissioners decided they could make improvements to the food stamp building for $87,000.
The food stamp building has 5,500 square feet. The old building has 3,000 square feet.
There was some controversy to the move when Weldon school officials objected. Probation and parole agreed to have sex offenders and others who commit crimes against children go to the day reporting center.
