Power restoration begins in area

The sun rises over Weldon this morning. The sun rises over Weldon this morning.

Power in the area is slowly being restored but officials are making no guarantees on when the work will be completed.

Some sources say it will take as much as three days for power to be restored in the area.

In Weldon, where a curfew was established, police Chief Mark Macon said there was one case of looting at the Blue Flame, where the plate glass window was busted through and cigarettes stolen. Roanoke Rapids interim police Chief Jeff Hinton said three break-ins were reported in the city where cigarettes were taken. Hinton said he could not tie the break-ins to the power outages.

Power along Roanoke Avenue was restored late this morning and some areas along Julian R. Allsbrook Highway in the Weldon area was restored.

Many people flocked to Travel World and the Oasis on Highway 903 to buy gas.

The majority of the area remains without power and there remain numerous trees down throughout the area. “The public works and fire department are working hard to get the roads cleared. We are asking people if they would to stay off the roads and streets,” Hinton said.

Interim City Manager Ed Wyatt said the city has put together an assessment team to survey damages throughout the city. Early speculation is the monetary damages associated with Hurricane Irene will match, if not exceed, those from April's tornado.

Hurricane Irene's impact on the area was different than most, Wyatt said, with the most devastating part happening at its end rather than beginning.

Wyatt confirmed what Interim Public Works Director Larry Chalker said Saturday, that the city should be reimbursed through the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the costs associated with the storm, which is one of the most devastating in recent history.

Throughout Halifax County, 47 houses were reported damaged during the hurricane, Public Information Officer Ginny Orvedahl said. Two people sustained minor injuries when a tree fell through their house.

Orvedahl said assessment teams are going throughout the county to survey damages. People who sustained damage during the storm should call 252-583-2031.

You people make me sick. You know nothing about the power that come into your home. Yes motels and walmart have power and buisnesses like that use three phase power and all that has to be on in order to get your single phase power on. Single phase is what feed homes with power. Three phase is what feeds single phase. For the men out there working on it they are doing a very dangerous job. You do not know what they go through they work 16 hour day and they dont have power either. These men come from all over the U.S they leave there family and there homes and for the ones that live here the storm has damaged there homes too but thats put on the back burner so they can help others. I have done this work for years and have spent weeks at a time away from my wife and kids to help other power companys restore power. Being a lineman is a way of life that only a select few can understand.

If you go on Dominions web site there is a listing of where crews are scheduled to work today, all are at the coast. What does this say about the importance of our area and the elderly and sick with no power or phones. Our economy is suffering here also.

It's been 3 days since the storm and a lot of homes in Roanoke Rapids is without power, but Walmart has power, Burger King, has power and a few other business. But, I guess my business isn't important to Roanoke Electric, because I'm still in the dark. Every morning I sit and watch about a hundred utility trucks sit at the Theatre. I have yet to see one of them in my neighborhood restoring power. But, you can best believe the power is on at the Hilton and the Theatre, hell, I live right behind them. Give me a break! Start restoring some power in these residential areas. I pay my bill too.
