Captain Andy Jackson of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said officers arrived at the scene shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Police are looking for a black male who stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and is heavyset.
He was last scene driving an older model Lincoln.
Jackson declined to give the victim’s name and did not know the reason for the shooting.
He did say the victim was shot with a handgun and police continue to investigate.
