Police probe Madison Street shooting

A call from Halifax Regional Medical Center staff Monday has led the Roanoke Police Department to begin a shooting probe.

Captain Andy Jackson said the police department received the call around 5 p.m. and discovered a 23-year-old male victim had been shot in the back of his right arm with a small caliber handgun.

The shooting occurred in the 300 block of Madison Street. The man told investigators he was approached by a group of people described as three black males. When he turned around to look he heard a loud sound and realized he had been shot.

Someone in the group made a reference like, “look at the guy in the khakis,” and the victim continued walking before the shot was fired, Jackson said.

A family member transported the victim to the hospital, which notified police.

Interviews in the neighborhood provided no leads, people saying they heard the shot but didn't see anything.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

In response to resident....it would be nice to know services go to deserving people but our country no longer cares about that stuff. We give aid to countries that won't allow women to drive or vote or be full citizens, which in essence says we support that discrimination. We send tons of money to other countries when our own people need help. America hasn't come up with plans to get people off aid and into jobs. America has lost jobs instead of creating them. I say we need to drug test members of the senate and congress because it sure seems like they are high on something and they are drawing some BIG checks.

@ Resident, So you are trying to say that the only crimes committed are done by people that receive public assistance, REALLY??? I guess that would be an assumption if the crimes that are committed by the so called "UPPER CLASS" wasn't covered up and thrown out of court. Everyone is not a product of their environment, and everyone wasn't born with a silver spoon in their mouth. But to attempt to judge people based on their income level is pathetic. Everybody in that area doesn't receive assistance some of them get out and work for theirs as I assume you do. Before you try to JUDGE people walk a mile in their shoes and know that there is only one GOD and HE created us all the so called RICH, the poor, the good the bad and the ugly.

The police departments here, locally and county wide act as if they have no idea on how to combat the problems we're having! It's time to replace the leadership. This little small town is starting to look more and more like the larger cities crime wise. While we're replacing the police leadership, we should also replace the town leaders too. Enough already!

You know that if the truth be told we would not have these problems if we were not such a welfare state and could get rid of the housing authority. These thugs would not be here in the numbers they are. Why dose'nt the housing auth. do a crimanal check and a drug test??? Why not social services do the same??

It seems to me that Neighborhood Watch groups have fizzled out and really can't do much against today's criminals....maybe we need to form a new group to protect ourselves, our families and our neighbors from this Dodge City type stuff. We need a leader.

Roanoke Rapids has lost all its luster, the "people" that hang out around the areas that these crimes are being commited in, have over run this town to the point that there's nothing that can be done about it. They won. There are certain areas in this town that I don't feel comfortable driving through, I know I wouldn't walk through them. South Rosemary is another awful place that needs the police patrolling the area. I have sat at the stop light there, and seen fights, drug deals, prostitutes, been yelled at, and had my car kicked. The town has turned into the "ghetto" areas that you used to see on T.V and wonder if people really lived like that..

It's a crying shame when you can't walk down a street without fearing for your life. Maybe if the law enforcement would watch the green apartment complex on the corner of 4th and Madison it would shed a lot of light on the crime in that area. All you have to do is sit back and watch. Its amazing what you can see amd learn all at the same time. Makes me want to keep my children in the house under lock n key!!!!!
