“They’re very, very clean counterfeit $100 bills,” Captain Andy Jackson said today. “The 100 in the bottom right corner will change color if tilted at an angle. They’re like real bills.”
The bills appear to have a hologram of Benjamin Franklin inside and all appear to have a watermark, although not a perfect one. “It will pass the counterfeit marker test and stores that have machines that weigh money, they will be weighed as $100 bills.”
The problem with the bills, Jackson said, is when torn they do not have threads.
Thus far BB&T turned in seven bills to police but there are probably as many as 13 that have been passed.
A teller became suspicious of the bills when counting them, Jackson said. “One of the clerks was suspicious of the feel and wary of the watermark.”
The front and back of the bills appeared to be glued together with a waxy substance.
Jackson said police are reviewing surveillance tapes of where the bills were passed. “We are expecting more. We have notified the Secret Service. They will be assisting us to track the flow of the cash.”
The serial numbers of the bills begin with the letters D and J, are all dated 2006 and have the code J 10 on them.
