Traffic on Roanoke Avenue Thursday. Traffic on Roanoke Avenue Thursday.

The state Highway Patrol answered 63 wreck calls in Halifax and Northampton counties during Thursday’s snowstorm.

“There were multiple collisions and tractor trailers on the side of the road,” said Sergeant Eric Shaberg. “There were no real serious injuries. People were still doing the speed limit on roads with ice and snow. One person was doing the speed limit and went into a curve and went straight. It’s just not common sense.”

There were 44 calls in Halifax and 19 in Northampton, Shaberg said. “There were quite a few calls back and forth. Some were individuals stuck in ditches.”

The wrecks started on Interstate 95 and escalated to other highways during the day.

This morning there are still spots on roads with black ice, the sergeant said. With warmer temperatures expected today there should be no major issues the rest of the day.

The Highway Patrol is watching weather reports which indicate more inclement weather could come Saturday.

“Have plenty of stopping distance,” Shaberg said. “Stop well before the stop sign.”

Should power go out and traffic lights aren’t working, Shaberg said new legislation requires drivers to treat those intersections as they would a four-way stop sign.

If you didn't grow up learning to drive in snow and ice, you don't appreciate the different techniques needed to handle a vehicle safely in those conditions. As we're seeing more winter weather in the area, posting safe driving tips might be useful. 4WD means nothing on ice, and speed and braking must be approached differently.
