The program targets a specific park for cleanup and other repair details.
While this month’s park is Rochelle, where a steam restoration project is being done, next month’s is Chockoyotte and there have already been offers to help with the efforts there, which include repairing fences and painting restrooms and landscape work.
Al Eatman of Lloyd’s Decorating has offered to do the restroom painting and several soccer teams and other athletic organizations have agreed to work at other parks, Wicker said.
“We’re encouraging the community to volunteer,” Wicker said. “We get some complaints but we want people to be part of the solution.”
The October park is Chockoyotte and work needed to be done includes:
• Repair and dress up fences; replace deteriorating traffic barriers around the parking lot; dress up trail to improve landscape areas such as removing diseased or deteriorated shrubs; repair and improve trail foot bridges; paint restrooms; improve aesthetics with simple two-tone paint scheme; inspect, repair or replace toilet and light fixtures; improve safety surface under playground equipment; power wash shelter floor and wall; repair or replace picnic table tops and seats as needed; repair or replace split rail fence on Wal-Mart side; remove infield built up lips; add proper sand/clay material to infield as needed; trim trees that need it; dress up shrubs along 4th Avenue; get inmate crew or other community service group to clean out drainage basin; try to repair scoreboards and if they cannot be repaired remove them.
The November park is Emry and the work needed to be done includes the same work as Chockoyotte and also:
• Bush hog area south of shelter; patch tennis court cracks as needed; remove hazard trees; get grass out of parking lot; repaint parking lot lines; fill areas around bleacher and bench slabs.
The December and January park is Ledgerwood and the work needed to be done includes the same work as the others and also:
• Explore working with Youth Fellowship or others to replace outfield fence at King Field and replacing or installing new Polycap and outfield windscreens.
The February parks are Doyle Field, Smith and Long and the work needed to be done includes the same work as the others and also:
• Patch tennis court cracks as needed and replace planking on benches at Long Park.
